You get what you pay for

It's a modern anvil weighing in at just under 100 lbs. and (at least when I got it) is was less than $160. You do get what you pay for. It has little to no rebound, there are certainly inclusions, there is no ring when you strike it, and it *will* dent--a 1" drop with a 1" ball bearing will leave a visible mark. On the other hand, it was a 100 lbs. that I could easily afford. That's why it gets four stars.A low-quality anvil that I can afford and is sitting in my shop is much better than a high quality anvil that I cannot afford sitting in an antique store. This is not a professional or serious amateur's anvil, nor should you expect it to be one. But it is a heavy work surface. When one feels that one has developed their skill set to the point where this anvil is holding them back, then it's easy to justify a better work piece. Or if you want to be really brave, you can always try to weld a high carbon steel plate to the top of the anvil table. But you'd have better luck buying a better anvil.
