The Heavy Duty Engine Hoist Helper

Are you a Motorhead or a gearhead according to your other half? Do your friends show up at night and on the weekends to ask you questions about why their car is doing X instead of Y. Are there more than three inoperable (they either don’t run or shouldn’t be driven) vehicles in your driveway or yard that aren’t owned by you? If you answered “yes” to more than two of these questions, you either have an immediate need for this engine hoist / shop crane add-on or you soon will. One of my friends is that guy. Everyone in our little town shows up at his place anytime they have an issue with almost anything mechanical (if it’s a computer, mostly electronic, or a rock, it shows up at my place). Between the yard at his place and workshop at mine, we could probably build the next generation autonomous vehicle for use on Mars. Seriously, the growing groups of related “things” has reached the point of excess. With him, there seems to be an increasing dearth of vehicles requiring major motor work. Let’s face it, with a new work truck topping the price chart at over $100K, fixing what you have makes a lot of sense if it’s possible. Fortunately, new or rebuilt motors are far more economical than buying a new vehicle and this shop crane makes a motor change a lot easier at the home garage or even under the tree out back. I ordered this manual shop crane hoist for a totally different use than moving a motor but my friend quickly jumped on borrowing it for a project at his house. It’s well constructed and has a tremendous capacity of 1,500 pounds. Keep in mind that the part I received is not the entire crane assembly but rather only an accessory, the three position engine leveler. It works seamlessly with your shop crane. I’m pleased with this much needed accessory and think you will be, too.

Very poor instructions. Missing Bolts, No lock washers.

Missing bolts, no lock washers. Terrible instructions, if they can be called instructions. Two large bolts and associated nuts were missing and I was surprised to find that no lock washers were included. I'll have to get replacements myself. I will use Locktite on the threads because no one wants any of the nuts to come off during a stressful lift. The engine hoist looks like a decent piece of equipment for a weekend mechanic but I'd suggest a more professional one for a serious mechanic. Fit and finish are decent and price is reasonable. I like the idea of a balance to adjust the load but it adds a lot of chain which may make a high lift more difficult. I haven't done a lift yet so can't comment on its effectiveness. I only have a 4cyl engine to lift so it won't be a difficult one.4 stars is probably generous but if you don't mind buying a couple of your own bolts and don't need directions, this may be a worthwhile purchase.

Works well. Not perfect but great value

Really like this engine hoist. Couple minor issues. Hydraulic ram slowly loses pressure over night so you need to not suspend things overnight. Front wheels control great with weight on them so I’d recommend putting auto bearing grease on the svivels and small wheel bearing services to help it roll around better but for the money, works great.
